From Chemical to Natural: How it all Began

Suzanne Lapensee

Years ago I started questioning how the products I put in me and on me would impact my overall health and well-being. I had heard people talk about how bad aluminum is, and how aluminum exposure leads to increased cancer risk. However I never really did anything about it. That is, until I forced myself to start reading the ingredients list on my deodorant containers. I seriously couldn't believe all of the toxic ingredients in one tiny bottle of spray or roll-on deodorant. Ingredients I couldn't even pronounce, lists of chemical ingredients with different numbers ... surely this wasn't good for my skin. But at the time all I ever really cared about was that they smelled good.

Nevermind the fact that these harsh, chemical-laden deodorants were constantly staining the armpits of my shirts dark yellow and I was constantly having to throw away otherwise perfectly good shirts. Embarrassing!

So, I finally decided that it was time to stop using these deodorants and use something free of nasty, harmful chemicals. This brought me into the wonderful (or not so wonderful?) world of natural deodorants. For years, I went from one natural deodorant to the next. I started with crystal deodorant, then natural spray deodorant, then an array of deodorant brands claiming they were "natural", yet still containing a myriad of very unnatural, harsh chemical ingredients. Slap a tree on the front and call it "natural" or use the word "nature", and watch how many unsuspecting consumers - including myself - are/were easily fooled.

The one thing all of these natural deodorants had in common? They all left me stinking after only a few hours! It was embarrassing, and totally frustrating, but I didn't want to give up and go back to using the harsh chemical deodorants. So I would just constantly reapply, but I never felt satisfied or fresh. I was always conscious of lifting my arms too high after being out of the house a few hours without reapplying - just in case I smelled. That isn't what I call a good quality product.

So eventually I had had enough. I decided to search for a recipe for homemade, natural vegan deodorant - one that would actually work. I tried several online which I wasn't crazy about. Some didn't work well, others had a texture that was too rough or hard and wasn't nice to apply. It took over a year to come up with a deodorant that we really loved. One that we only had to apply once a day and would last literally into the wee hours of the night, and we'd still be smelling fly! Finally, a deodorant that is natural, no nasty chemicals, doesn't test on animals and can hold up after an intense 2-hour gym session. Yes! That was our "hallelujah" moment where we knew we had something fabulous. We love the texture so much, and the scents that we have worked hard to perfect. And our friends and family loved it too.

So the next logical step was to share our awesome deo with the world. We hope you love it as much as we do. I feel happy every morning putting it on, knowing that I am using something good for my body, my health, the animals and the planet. And I really hope you'll feel the same. :)

Peace and cookies,

Suzanne
